**Contract Position**
Role Summary
We’re looking for a Game Designer (Gameplay) to help build and refine the core gameplay experience for the Zoo Dojo demo. This role focuses on implementing and designing moment-to-moment gameplay using Unreal Engine 5, with an emphasis on Blueprint scripting and the Gameplay Ability System (GAS/GASP).
You will play a key role in bringing our combat, abilities, and player interactions to life, working closely with the studio lead, engineers, and artists to create a polished, fun, and responsive demo experience. While this is primarily a gameplay-focused role, level design experience is a strong plus.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement core gameplay systems using UE5 Blueprints and GAS/GASP
- Build and iterate on combat mechanics, abilities, and player interactions
- Prototype and refine core demo features (movement, combat flow, enemy encounters)
- Collaborate with engineers and designers to ensure systems are scalable and cleanly implemented
- Tune gameplay feel, responsiveness, and balance through playtesting
- Assist with enemy behavior design and encounter setup
- Document systems, mechanics, and implementation workflows
- Identify and solve gameplay issues quickly during rapid iteration cycles
- (Bonus) Contribute to level layout, room design, and gameplay pacing
Requirements
- Strong experience with Unreal Engine 5, especially Blueprint scripting
- Working knowledge of Gameplay Ability System (GAS/GASP)
- Understanding of gameplay systems design and player experience
- Ability to prototype and iterate quickly in-engine
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative, remote environment
- Reliable weekly availability and proactive communication
Bonus (Not Required)
- Experience designing combat systems or ability-based gameplay
- Familiarity with roguelites, co-op systems, or scalable difficulty
- Level design experience (room layout, pacing, platforming)
- Experience with animation integration, state machines, or gameplay polish
- Previous experience shipping or contributing to a playable demo
Compensation & Terms
- This is a volunteer position (no salary).
- Includes a revenue bonus contract for Zoo Dojo.
- Role includes a signed agreement for clarity and fairness.
- Listed as Game Designer in credits.
- Future opportunity for equity or paid roles as the studio grows.
Full terms will be outlined in a Volunteer Contractor Agreement, which includes conditions for active involvement and royalty eligibility.
Pay: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
