Role Summary

We’re looking for a Game Designer (Gameplay) to help build and refine the core gameplay experience for the Zoo Dojo demo. This role focuses on implementing and designing moment-to-moment gameplay using Unreal Engine 5, with an emphasis on Blueprint scripting and the Gameplay Ability System (GAS/GASP).

You will play a key role in bringing our combat, abilities, and player interactions to life, working closely with the studio lead, engineers, and artists to create a polished, fun, and responsive demo experience. While this is primarily a gameplay-focused role, level design experience is a strong plus.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement core gameplay systems using UE5 Blueprints and GAS/GASP
  • Build and iterate on combat mechanics, abilities, and player interactions
  • Prototype and refine core demo features (movement, combat flow, enemy encounters)
  • Collaborate with engineers and designers to ensure systems are scalable and cleanly implemented
  • Tune gameplay feel, responsiveness, and balance through playtesting
  • Assist with enemy behavior design and encounter setup
  • Document systems, mechanics, and implementation workflows
  • Identify and solve gameplay issues quickly during rapid iteration cycles
  • (Bonus) Contribute to level layout, room design, and gameplay pacing

Requirements

  • Strong experience with Unreal Engine 5, especially Blueprint scripting
  • Working knowledge of Gameplay Ability System (GAS/GASP)
  • Understanding of gameplay systems design and player experience
  • Ability to prototype and iterate quickly in-engine
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative, remote environment
  • Reliable weekly availability and proactive communication

Bonus (Not Required)

  • Experience designing combat systems or ability-based gameplay
  • Familiarity with roguelites, co-op systems, or scalable difficulty
  • Level design experience (room layout, pacing, platforming)
  • Experience with animation integration, state machines, or gameplay polish
  • Previous experience shipping or contributing to a playable demo

Compensation & Terms

  • This is a volunteer position (no salary).
  • Includes a revenue bonus contract for Zoo Dojo.
  • Role includes a signed agreement for clarity and fairness.
  • Listed as Game Designer in credits.
  • Future opportunity for equity or paid roles as the studio grows.

Full terms will be outlined in a Volunteer Contractor Agreement, which includes conditions for active involvement and royalty eligibility.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Flexible schedule
