Role Summary

We’re looking for a Game Designer (Gameplay) to help build and refine the core gameplay experience for the Zoo Dojo demo. This role focuses on implementing and designing moment-to-moment gameplay using Unreal Engine 5, with an emphasis on Blueprint scripting and the Gameplay Ability System (GAS/GASP).

You will play a key role in bringing our combat, abilities, and player interactions to life, working closely with the studio lead, engineers, and artists to create a polished, fun, and responsive demo experience. While this is primarily a gameplay-focused role, level design experience is a strong plus.

Responsibilities

  1. Design and implement core gameplay systems using UE5 Blueprints and GAS/GASP
  2. Build and iterate on combat mechanics, abilities, and player interactions
  3. Prototype and refine core demo features (movement, combat flow, enemy encounters)
  4. Collaborate with engineers and designers to ensure systems are scalable and cleanly implemented
  5. Tune gameplay feel, responsiveness, and balance through playtesting
  6. Assist with enemy behavior design and encounter setup
  7. Document systems, mechanics, and implementation workflows
  8. Identify and solve gameplay issues quickly during rapid iteration cycles
  9. (Bonus) Contribute to level layout, room design, and gameplay pacing

Requirements

  1. Strong experience with Unreal Engine 5, especially Blueprint scripting
  2. Working knowledge of Gameplay Ability System (GAS/GASP)
  3. Understanding of gameplay systems design and player experience
  4. Ability to prototype and iterate quickly in-engine
  5. Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  6. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative, remote environment
  7. Reliable weekly availability and proactive communication

Bonus (Not Required)

  1. Experience designing combat systems or ability-based gameplay
  2. Familiarity with roguelites, co-op systems, or scalable difficulty
  3. Level design experience (room layout, pacing, platforming)
  4. Experience with animation integration, state machines, or gameplay polish
  5. Previous experience shipping or contributing to a playable demo

Compensation & Terms

  1. This is a volunteer position (no salary).
  2. Includes a revenue bonus contract for Zoo Dojo.
  3. Role includes a signed agreement for clarity and fairness.
  4. Listed as Game Designer in credits.
  5. Future opportunity for equity or paid roles as the studio grows.

Full terms will be outlined in a Volunteer Contractor Agreement, which includes conditions for active involvement and royalty eligibility.
