# Remote Staff Software Engineer, AI-Native Systems (Tech Lead)


## About the Role


Wheel is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, AI-Native Systems to set technical direction for agentic systems and lead the development of production-ready AI-native infrastructure. This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on building and operating AI agents and platform capabilities in a regulated healthcare environment.


The role operates with the scope of a domain owner, taking ambiguous problems from definition through sequencing, technical execution, and measurable outcomes. The Staff Engineer will lead squads or cross-team initiatives, make architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and help establish engineering standards for responsible and reliable AI systems.


## Key Responsibilities


### Technical Leadership & Direction


* Own technical direction for a significant AI-native domain, such as agent architecture, platform abstractions, or evaluation and guardrail infrastructure.

* Act as technical lead for a squad or cross-team initiative.

* Decompose ambiguous problems, sequence delivery, identify blockers, and maintain focus on measurable outcomes.

* Write and review design documents and make and document key architectural decisions.

* Remain hands-on in implementation and take ownership of technically challenging parts of the build.


### AI Platform Foundations


* Build and extend abstraction layers that enable teams to integrate AI capabilities safely across services.

* Define shared libraries, engineering patterns, and guardrails for use by other teams.

* Drive adoption of reusable AI platform capabilities.

* Translate privacy, security, and compliance requirements for sensitive data into concrete technical architecture.


### Cloud-Native Engineering


* Own full-stack delivery using TypeScript/Node.js and Python, including service and API layers, data-processing jobs, and internal interfaces.

* Use modern cloud infrastructure, event-driven patterns, CI/CD, and observability to deliver scalable AI-native systems.

* Own production deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and on-call responsibilities.

* Improve the operational reliability of inherited systems.


### Stakeholder Engagement & Advisory


* Partner with product, operations, clinical operations, and business leaders to evaluate AI use cases and technical approaches.

* Lead design sessions, proofs of concept, and build-with sessions with workflow users.

* Communicate technical trade-offs, risks, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including executives.

* Influence roadmap and prioritization based on technical risk, sequencing, and cost.


### Measure & Improve


* Own the evaluation strategy for the assigned domain.

* Define metrics, test harnesses, and evaluation plans for agent accuracy, latency, safety, and cost-effectiveness.

* Instrument systems to make AI behavior observable after deployment.

* Iterate based on data, feedback, and changing requirements.

## Required Qualifications


* 8+ years of experience building and operating production software.

* Meaningful full-stack development depth across a TypeScript/Node.js backend and at least one other programming language.

* Hands-on experience designing and deploying agentic systems in production.

* Experience with retrieval, orchestration, tool/function calling, and evaluation.

* Technical leadership experience as an individual contributor, including domain ownership and leading multi-engineer initiatives to completion.

* Demonstrated ability to drive technical decisions across team boundaries without positional authority.

* Ability to take loosely defined problems and develop them into shipped, measurable, agent-powered workflows.

* Working practice of using AI development tools as a development multiplier, with judgment about when to trust, verify, or override them.

* Strong cloud-native engineering fundamentals.

* Experience with CI/CD, observability, and operating production systems.

* Fluency with relational data and SQL.

* Strong written and verbal communication skills.

* Ability to write effective technical design documents.

* Comfort working with ambiguity and a bias toward shipping measurable results.
