Web Developer

WABE is seeking a versatile Web Developer with expertise in WordPress, PHP, and custom plugin/theme development to design, build, and maintain our primary website and supporting digital infrastructure. This role is central to WABE’s digital presence and ensures editors, reporters, and podcast teams have a reliable, efficient publishing experience.


In addition to WordPress development, the ideal candidate brings a broad skill set across front-end and back-end programming, modern frameworks, and infrastructure management. As WABE evolves, this role may also lead or support transitions to new CMS platforms, integrations, and other digital systems. The Web Developer will collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners, manage technical projects, and help deliver user-friendly, secure, and high-performing digital experiences across multiple products, including websites, newsletters, mobile apps, and digital marketing initiatives.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

WordPress & PHP Development

  1. Develop and maintain custom WordPress plugins and themes.
  2. Write clean, efficient, reusable PHP code.
  3. Implement API and third-party integrations.
  4. Ensure adherence to WordPress development best practices.


User Interface & Front-End Development

  1. Implement responsive, engaging UIs with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks (e.g., React, Vue, Angular).
  2. Translate UX/UI designs into functional, accessible code.
  3. Ensure compatibility across browsers and devices.
  4. Apply SEO and WCAG accessibility best practices.


Back-End & Infrastructure

  1. Build and maintain server-side components, APIs, and databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  2. Manage Pantheon hosting workflows and optimize performance/security with Cloudflare.
  3. Implement caching, CDN, DNS, and security configurations.
  4. Ensure uptime, monitoring, and scalability.


Publishing Workflow & Internal Users

  1. Maintain and improve the publishing interface for non-technical staff.
  2. Troubleshoot workflow issues and resolve them quickly.
  3. Build tools/features that improve efficiency for content teams.


Future Platform Adaptability

  1. Support potential CMS migrations or platform changes.
  2. Learn and apply new programming languages, frameworks, or tools as organizational needs evolve.
  3. Provide technical guidance during platform transitions.


Testing & Optimization

  1. Conduct QA, debugging, and troubleshooting across browsers, devices, and platforms.
  2. Monitor and optimize site performance, security, and reliability.
  3. Enhance interactivity through animations, intuitive navigation, and user experience improvements.


Project Management & Collaboration

  1. Manage development projects from planning through deployment.
  2. Work closely with product managers, designers, developers, and external vendors.
  3. Clearly communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.


Continuous Learning

  1. Stay up to date with industry trends, frameworks, and best practices.
  2. Experiment with new tools and approaches to improve WABE’s digital ecosystem.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Web Development, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  2. Strong proficiency in WordPress and PHP (themes, custom plugins).
  3. Experience with Pantheon hosting and Cloudflare configuration.
  4. Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and front-end frameworks (VueJS, React, Angular).
  5. Familiarity with Node.js, Python, Ruby, or other back-end languages.
  6. Experience with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  7. Strong debugging, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  8. Experience with Git and deployment workflows.
  9. Understanding of SEO principles, accessibility standards, and responsive design.
  10. Ability to manage projects and collaborate across distributed teams.
  11. Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  12. Portfolio showcasing custom WordPress/PHP projects and broader web development work.
