General Dynamics NASSCO is one of three shipyards in the Marine Systems group of General Dynamics Corporation (NYSE: GD). General Dynamics NASSCO traces its beginnings to the industrial heart of San Diego, along the working waterfront of beautiful and historic San Diego Bay. The company has been designing and building ships in San Diego’s industrial corridor since 1960 and is the largest full service shipyard on the West Coast of the United States.
Job Summary
Builds and tears down scaffolds, wooden structures, safety handrails and equipment. Cleans tanks and performs general shipyard cleanup. Sorts, inspects and stacks lumber and metal scrap. Operates high reach equipment and saws. Assists other trades in sea trials and ship launchings. Moves furniture and other equipment as needed. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.
Qualification Standards
Preferred scaffold building experience. Must have the ability to read a tape measure and operate power tools. Must have ability to work in confined spaces and access and move around ship safely. Must pass mechanical reasoning, scaffold building and chain saw test administered by NASSCO. Must follow roping and tying of equipment and furniture procedures. Must have ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be available to work any shift. Must comprehend written and verbal instructions and hear warning signals, read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations and warnings.
Essential Job Tasks
1. Clean tanks/vessels in confined spaces and perform general shipyard cleaning
2. Build and dismantle scaffolds and other wooden structures
3. Build and dismantle safety handrails and other equipment
4. Sort, inspect and stack lumber and metal scaffold components
5. Assist other trades in sea trials and ship launchings.
6. Move furniture and other equipment.
Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids
Measuring equipment, metal, wood, scaffold sub-section, bolts, clips, hand tools, pneumatic tools, high reach equipment, saws, drills, chainsaws sky climbers, cable lines, rope lines and cleaning equipment.
Physical/Mental Involvement
Frequent climbing in and out of confined space, tanks, and scaffold, frequent lifting 50 - 100 lbs. with the assistance of another person when needed, carrying lumber, walking, standing, bending, reaching, manual dexterity, finger dexterity, pushing, pulling, kneeling, seeing, hearing and occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, crawling through small openings and working in reclined positions as needed. Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships. Hearing warning signals, reading, and comprehending safety instructions. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employee’s work area.
Marginal Job Tasks
Housekeeping in all work areas, including sweeping. May be required to attend safety, quality and/or process improvement meetings.
Environmental Factors
Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which can cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to constantly moving machines, mechanical parts, and high levels of constant noise.
Payscale: $20.76 - $28.57
This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
