Job Description:

Museum Fabrication Group is an exhibit design and fabrication firm producing exhibits and experiences within museums, nature centers, libraries, visitor centers, universities, and many other facilities across the country. We teach content through interpretation and storytelling, and every day strive to inspire others through thoughtful, engaging design.

We are seeking a Construction Detailer to join our creative, artistic, and fun group of hard-working designers and fabricators. The Construction Detailer serves as the bridge between design and fabrication, translating exhibit concepts into buildable production documents while preserving the creative vision of each project. This position combines technical detailing with creative problem solving and requires extensive collaboration across departments. Candidates with backgrounds in Industrial Design, Product Design, Furniture Design, Engineering Technology, or similar disciplines will find opportunities to apply both their creative and technical skills throughout the design and fabrication process.

Duties Include

  • Collaborate with Fabrication Leads, Project Managers, Estimators, Senior Construction Detailer, and Creative Director to ensure methods and materials are within budget and meet established standards
  • Collaborate with the design team throughout the design process, consulting on production methods, materials, manufacturability, and maintaining key aesthetic decisions through fabrication
  • Collaborate with Project Supervisors to develop construction sequencing, installation plans, and shipping and site access strategies
  • Research materials, hardware, fabrication methods, and manufacturing processes to meet design intent while balancing durability, budget, and efficiency
  • Perform basic engineering and value engineering to improve fabrication efficiency without compromising design quality
  • Model exhibits and custom components in Fusion 360 and produce comprehensive production documents, including hardware specifications, part sheets, finish schedules, assembly details, and fabrication drawings
  • Develop prototypes, mockups, or iterative design solutions when needed to validate construction methods and fabrication approaches
  • Create G-Code for cutting parts on a 3-axis CNC router
  • Occasionally operate a CNC router
  • Occasionally travel for site measurements and exhibit installations

Required Skills

  • Strong 3D CAD modeling skills using Fusion 360 or experience in similar software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD 3D, Vectorworks, Creo, Rhino, or other parametric modeling programs
  • AutoCAD 2D experience
  • Familiarity with standard office software including Microsoft Excel and Outlook
  • General knowledge of woodworking, manufacturing, fabrication, or construction materials and methods
  • Ability to think through products and environments from both a user experience and manufacturing perspective
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to balance creative intent with practical fabrication requirements
  • Ability to work within proximity of various types of epoxies, adhesives, paints, and other shop materials

Bonus Skills

  • Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly InDesign
  • Industrial Design or Product Design experience
  • Furniture, fixture, exhibit, or custom millwork design
  • Physical prototyping or model making
  • CNC operation and maintenance
  • 3D printing or rapid prototyping experience
  • Cabinetry, machining, manufacturing, or related fabrication experience
  • Electronics and A/V experience

Education

Formal CAD training (AAS), Industrial Design, Product Design, Engineering Technology, Engineering Sciences, or equivalent applicable work experience is preferred. Candidates with Industrial Design or Product Design backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.

Taylor Studios hires candidates who demonstrate effective time management, thoughtful acceptance of constructive criticism, persistence, curiosity, active learning, and big-picture conceptual thinking with a keen eye for detail and organization. Successful candidates possess a collaborative and creative mindset, are resourceful and business-minded, and are versatile team players with a can-do attitude.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex design challenges and seeing ideas evolve from sketches and 3D models into fully fabricated exhibits. Every project is different, offering opportunities to work with wood, metal, acrylic, graphics, lighting, interactive components, and custom fabrication techniques while collaborating closely with designers, fabricators, and project managers.

This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits including a flexible schedule, 401(k), health insurance, and many opportunities for creative cross-training. Candidates of any experience level with strong portfolios will be considered. Compensation is commensurate with experience and auxiliary skills.
