Students in Heavy Truck Driving are trained in the following subject areas:

  • Checking vehicles to ensure that mechanical, safety and emergency equipment is in good working order
  • Maneuvering trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew, and checking that vehicle and loading equipment are properly positioned
  • Collecting delivery instructions from appropriate sources, verifying instructions and routes

Requirements
Before entering the program, students must:

  • Good hearing, 20/40 vision or better (may not be colorblind), and normal use of arms and legs.
  • Not allowed for interstate truck drivers: epilepsy, diabetes controlled by insulin, or the use of any controlled substances not prescribed by a licensed physician
  • No felony convictions involving the use of a motor vehicle, a crime involving drugs, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusing to submit to an alcohol test required by a state
  • A driver must not have left the scene of a crime or caused a fatality through negligent operation of a motor vehicle
  • Complete all required activity in the Career Preparation Period, including Career Exploration and Career Success/Workplace Skills.
  • Meet basic academic requirements in math and reading.
  • Have a valid driver's license or no barriers to receiving a license while enrolled.
  • Have a clean driving record.
