Work with plant personnel to assure continued improvement of quality through communication and review of product compliance to specification and to develop programs that assist in the improvement of quality. To implement a comprehensive quality system to maintain food safety. Must be knowledgeable about all food safety standards that are customary within the food industry and mandated government regulations. Common standards that are expected to be familiar with include Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) and the standards set by Safe Quality Foods (SQF)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and develop processes and critical process points with manufacturing to assure compliance with specifications.
- Continue updating ongoing HACCP programs
- Work closely with manufacturing and co-packers to assure continued improvement of quality through communication and review of product compliance to specification.
- Document production compliance with GMP and Critical Process Points.
- Train production (and QC) associates in GMPs.
- Monitor, upgrade and document an ongoing allergen program and other environmental programs such as organic programs.
- Work actively with manufacturing supervisors and plant managers to increase our ability to be proactive and decrease problems during production.
- Work closely with manufacturing to improve plant hygiene.
- Audit manufacturing plants and environs for GMP compliance; interface with local company quality assurance/co-pack staff as appropriate for timely and cost-efficient response.
- Update database to produce new specifications
- Prepare for 3rd Party Audits
- Set up and evaluate sanitation program
- Conduct Mock Recalls
- Write and Maintain Processing, Packaging, Receiving, QA and Sanitation manuals.
- Crate and maintain written documentation of SOP’s, Policies, Lab Methods, GMP’s, Ingredients & Packaging.
- Statistical Process Control evaluation/set up and training
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise Staff
- Evaluate Staff Performance
- Coaching and disciplining staff
- Demonstrate strong management by being aware of the office/production activities and keeping up to date with on-going initiatives to provide the most effective customer services and ensure staff performance. This includes effective conflict resolution skills and directs team in a fair and supportive manner.
- Ensures that human resources policies, procedures, and practices are consistently applied as well as the communication that occurs consistently with direct reports.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Bachelor’s Degree in food sciences, food process engineering or appropriate biological sciences.
- 5 + years work-related experience in food product development or quality control.
- Certified SQF Practitioner
- HACCP Certified
- Thorough knowledge of US Food Regulatory systems, FDA, Halal, Kosher, GMO, HACCP & FSMA
- Experience with organic certification and ingredients a plus.
- Ability to successfully manage multiple projects in a fast paced environment.
- Exceptional communication, creative, analytical and leadership skills.
- Approximately 15% out of town travel is required
