The Photo Tech works within the Production Operations group and is responsible for bringing clear and logical order to photographic content on and off set, which is crucial to building and preserving a vast and ever-expanding collection of valuable digital assets, utilizing proven efficient workflows, all while following company security guidelines. You will manage all files in a prescribed standardized order while ensuring all assets are consistently saved on multiple encrypted hard drives with redundancy. It is paramount that unbroken attention is given to the safekeeping and delivery of assets captured during production. The Photo Tech will work with photographers as the DigiTech for shoots and as a traditional DigiTech for Newsroom shoots as needed.
This role will require working alongside the photo team, creatives, retouchers, producers, and other key stakeholders, where impeccable customer service is required under high-stress levels. Nothing on a shoot is constant, so this role must pivot gracefully with the ever-changing needs.
The Photo Tech will be responsible for interfacing and communicating directly and independently with stakeholders throughout Marcom.
Duties and Responsibilities:
As a member of the Photo Tech team, you need to be able to handle shifting demands, be reliable, dependable, calm under pressure, be a clear communicator, and be an excellent team player.
- Assist team members with receiving images and helping to sort, update, or modify images based on deliverable needs.
- Consistently provide concise organization of assets in a curation based on criteria supplied by creatives and producers.
- Set up in-house shoots with proper file naming structures and metadata standards.
- Curate photo assets to ensure accessible image location within the project
- Work collaboratively with Creatives, Photographers, and Producers to make final image selections for the site, ready to be passed to the post-production or Archive teams.
- The Photo Tech will occasionally accompany photo teams on location and assist shoots for nightly reviews and uploads.
- Help maintain the asset cataloging of the photo file system.
- Design, implement, and maintain naming standards and metadata schemas that reflect the actual and ever-changing business needs.
- Maintain workflows for the use of assets in all relevant systems.
- Contribute to developing and improving documented protocols, processes, and procedures.
- Support in asset/content creation, trafficking, and asset requests.
- Occasional multiple overnight stays for destination shoots and airline travel.
- Maintain industry knowledge of current industry solutions, asset management, and photography trends.
- Continuously learn and strive to be an expert in everything photos.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all internal and external teams.
- May be called upon to do camera, photo, device, and image comparative research and testing.
- May be asked to work on solutions to workflows, processes, and tools for other teams and departments
- On occasion will be asked to stand in for test shoots. You may be asked to stand in for a photographer in sporadic cases when unexpected production emergencies arise.
- Develop, update, and maintain role-specific user training programs and materials pertinent to all asset management systems, tools, workflows, and team processes, creating print and video assets.
- Must train others efficiently and thoroughly using processes and procedures learned in the role.
Key Qualifications:
As our in-house Photo Tech, you must be highly organized, self-starting, have excellent time management, and have extraordinary communication skills. You will need to thrive working in a collaborative and creative team environment while also being able to work alone when the need arises. The ideal candidate must have a passionate interest in photography and photographic systems, as well as be able to thrive in a faced paced photo production environment.
- Expertise in Capture One and MacOS are required.
- Proficiency in Photo Mechanic, ChronoSync, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Better Rename, Terminal, TidyUp, and iOS is required.
- Must understand camera lenses, lens optics, lighting, the exposure triangle (and ISO), and DSLR sensors.
- Understand how consumer electronics are used as a photographic tool while addressing challenges and differences compared to a traditional DSLR.
- Must understand and be able to apply the scientific method to all troubleshooting situations.
- Have a basic understanding of different image file formats and camera raw file formats.
- Have basic knowledge of digital photography systems, with a proficient understanding of camera systems from all major manufacturers, DSLR, and medium format systems.
- Have excellent computer skills and specific expertise with MacOS.
- Must be able to work with ambiguity in all facets of the job.

- Must be able to train quickly, follow procedures to the letter and exhibit the task management skills necessary to meet or exceed productivity requirements.
- Follow through with commitments on tight deadlines, which fosters mutual trust with fellow team members and internal customers.
- Have good judgment and can follow security practices to protect our unreleased images from exposure.
- Problem-solving skills are crucial, such as the ability to perform detailed, precise work with high accuracy in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines, excellent memory, and an eye for detail.
- Occasionally required to spend extended periods at a computer screen.
- Must have a valid passport with an expiration date minimum of two years from the hire date
- Must have access to reliable transport in the Bay Area to respond to varied and changing production needs.
- Must be able to work in extreme and varied environments. (ie. Hiking in a jungle, on a boat at sea, on a sub-arctic glacier, etc.)
- You may be required to travel domestically and occasionally internationally for shoots.
- You may be required to travel for several continuous weeks, as the project demands.
- Depending on production needs, travel may be up to 60% of any given quarter.
- Able to work at least 40 hours per week from the main office.
- Depending on the project, you may be required to work overtime with little or zero notice.
- Must work independently and effectively while on production sets and remote locations
- Able to work different shifts and schedules to support production shoots (swing and/or graveyard on occasion)
- Must be able to time manage effectively to ensure deadlines, schedules, as well as meetings are not missed
- Able to lift 45 pounds to load and unload equipment needed for production.
Education & Experience:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Library Science, Computer Science, Photography, or equivalent is preferred.
- Must have developed own photographic practice.
- Minimum of 5 years working as a digital asset manager, photographer's assistant, or digital tech role.
- Minimum of 5 years of photographic set experience. Minimum of 10 years of photography experience.
