Job Description:

GENERAL PURPOSE: The basic workweek shall be 40 hours plus such additional time as is necessary to accomplish the basic function/purpose.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Dean of Nursing has primary responsibility and the authority to administer the assigned nursing programs. The Dean of Nursing reports on matters relating to teaching, advising students, curriculum development, program revisions, textbook selection, student learning outcomes assessment, and other matters as assigned in support of the mission of the Nursing department and in support of the mission of the college.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Personnel
  • Recruit, select, and hire nursing faculty and staff for employment.
  • Design and monitor development plans for faculty.
  • Recommend faculty and staff for promotion and retention.
  • Oversee administration of the faculty appraisal program.
  • Establish and/or maintain appropriate job descriptions for nursing faculty and staff.
  • Assign faculty loads in accordance with college policy and determine the need for additional faculty release time for administrative duties.
  • Foster development of the team concept of program responsibility and commitment to the program objectives and mission by encouraging active participation of program members and promoting rapport within the campus and community.
  • Participate in local, state, and national nursing education meetings.
  • Arrange for coverage of classes during own absences and emergency leaves.
  • Model professional behavior and standards of practice.
  • Budgets
  • Participate in the annual budget planning process for the nursing education program budgets to include operating and capital expenditures.
  • Manage the nursing program budgets.
  • Arrange for the procurement and inventory of supplies and instructional materials.
  • Administration
  • Ensure and document the assigned nursing programs' compliance with the Nurse Practice Act, the Kentucky Board of Nursing rules and regulations, and all other state or federal regulations.
  • Act as a liaison with the Kentucky Board of Nursing and national regulators.
  • Ensure and document the assigned nursing programs' compliance with the respective state and federal regulations.
  • Develop and maintain the relationship between the nursing programs and the college including but not limited to acting as liaison with other programs, departments, and with other nursing education programs.
  • Demonstrate leadership within the faculty for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum and other nursing education program components.
  • Identify and advocate for services needed by students in the nursing education program.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships within the community, including fostering the nursing education program’s responsiveness to community/employer needs.
  • Participate in activities that facilitate professional expertise in the areas of administration, teaching, and maintenance of nursing competence.
  • Participate in regional accreditation reviews and reports, as requested.
  • Coordinate program accreditation activities and self-study.
  • Assist in publicizing and dissemination of information about the programs.
  • Collaborate with admissions in recruiting students.
  • Provide an environment conducive to learning for students and nursing faculty.
  • Promote the professional development of nursing students.
  • Develop and facilitate program Nursing Advisory Committees that meet biannually.
  • Insure ongoing evaluation of nursing courses and the nursing programs.
  • Hear and assess faculty and student concerns.
  • Communicate accurately Department of Nursing and the college policies and rationales.
  • Responsible for providing and having final authority concerning the evaluation of students, faculty, and the nursing program.
  • Interacts, communicates, and coordinates with colleagues of the college’s nursing programs, which could be at the same campus and on other campuses.
  • Committee/Meeting Responsibilities
  • Serve as a member of the Department of Nursing Faculty Meeting.
  • Serve as a member of the nursing programs Assessment and Curriculum Committees.
  • Serve as a chair of the Nursing Admission meetings.
  • Advising
  • Assist students with course scheduling and provide guidance in their academic and personal development.
  • Serve as a mentor and advisor for nursing faculty.
  • Assist faculty and students in identifying and utilizing resources that may contribute to their success.
  • Curricula
  • Submit suggestions for changes in master syllabi to the respective Assessment and Curriculum Committee first and then to the Department of Nursing.
  • Review projected course offerings for the program on a quarterly basis and recommend needed revisions to the Dean of Nursing.
  • Design and insure implementation of the new curriculum.
  • Participate in the evaluation of curriculum.
  • Teaching Load
  • The Dean of Nursing may assume up to one course as a teaching load.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

SKILLS/ABILITIES: Management and leadership skills; organizational and research skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills; online education experience.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

  • (a) A minimum of a master's or higher degree in nursing from an accredited college or university. In lieu of a master's degree, the program administrator shall have completed that portion of a doctoral degree that would be equivalent to a master's in nursing degree while enrolled in an accredited college or university with a timeline in place for degree attainment. The program administrator shall provide documentation that shows an active and steady progression towards the doctoral degree;
  • (b) A minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience within the immediate past seven (7) years;
  • (c) A minimum of two (2) years of full-time teaching experience at or above the academic level of the program of nursing;
  • (d) An unencumbered current license, privilege, or temporary work permit to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Kentucky;
  • (e) A current knowledge of nursing practice at the level of the program;
  • (f) Demonstrated experience or preparation in education that includes teaching adults, adult learning theory teaching methods, curriculum development, and curriculum evaluation. A program administrator without previous program administrator experience shall have a mentor assigned by the governing institution and an educational development plan implemented. The mentor shall have documented experience in program administration.

BACKGROUND: Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Sitting for extended periods of time. Daily use of computer, phone, and other office equipment. Lifting (max about 10 pounds), minimal reaching, bending, and stooping.

Typical school/office environment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $70,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

  • Florence, KY: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Preferred)

Experience:

  • Teaching: 2 years (Required)

License/Certification:

  • Nursing License (Required)
