Job Description:

Over 100,000 businesses and millions of people use 1Password to protect their most important information, and we believe those people – and the companies they work for – shouldn’t have to choose between security and productivity. We see security as a human challenge, rather than a technological one. It’s hard work, but our mission has always been to ease the tension between security and convenience and help people navigate the digital world without fear or friction. Human-centric security is part of our DNA, but human-centricity is also the backbone of our culture. We encourage big ideas and new ways of working that help make the online world safer for everyone.

We are looking for an expert technical writer and strong people leader to power the next phase of growth at 1Password. As the Technical Writing Manager, you will lead a technical writing team that is passionate about explaining complex concepts simply for our millions of users. We follow a Git-based, docs-as-code workflow. A successful leader in this role can be a thought partner across 1Password, inspire and grow the current 5-person team, and can bring a vision to life.

You will directly chart our next phase of how we educate users while continuing to develop into a strong communications leader. We’re growing, and we are looking for someone passionate about joining a dynamic, global team of security, product, and content writers that value you for you.

This is a Remote opportunity within Canada and the US.

What we're looking for:

  • A leader-coach who wants to grow leadership skills while being hands-on in a scaling environment (70% management, 30% contributor)
  • A naturally curious and highly motivated individual to jump in, oversee our many technical and support articles that customers use today, and evolve what and how we write
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 5+ years of writing a web application, software, or developer tooling documentation and 3+ years leading content or technical writing teams
  • Nice to have: API content experience, fluency in reading and writing several programming languages, DevOps experience
  • Expert writing and editing skills. You relish learning and explaining new technical concepts or practices in an accurate, concise, and compelling way
  • Strong strategic planning experience and a passion for using metrics to measure success
  • Can easily form deep relationships with business and technical partners
  • Able to empower engineers to write their high-quality internal documentation
  • Experience managing content translation and localization processes
  • Have a strong vision and can lead strategic initiatives to evolve our technical documentation, support sites, and how we engage and educate users
  • Ready to structure and guide the team so they proactively identify writing opportunities, collaborate cross-functionally, and deliver high-quality documentation
  • Caring people leader that manages, mentors, and also advocates for the team's well-being, growth, and knowledge sharing
  • Views mentoring and feedback as essential to the team and personal development
  • Strong ability to collaborate with leaders in Engineering, Design, UX Research, Customer Support, and more on how customers experience and understand our products
  • Own our writing and style guide standards, how we organize and architect content systems, and the tools we use for our technical writing craft
  • Eager to experiment with new ways to write that inspire internal users and our customers
  • Fosters a data-driven culture that uses metrics and qualitative insights to guide what and how we write
  • Able to lead in a rapidly-scaling, remote-first environment

What you can expect:

  • A management role with significant growth opportunity, both as a people leader and to shape the future of content at 1Password
  • Lead the hiring and growth of our technical writing team, including how to balance projects and priorities as the team scales – if you can dream it, let’s do it
  • Own the strategy, roadmap, and goals for Technical Writing as well as communicate the team’s strategy and decisions
  • Drive technical writing and documentation projects as a trusted partner to teams throughout 1Password
  • Lead by example and inspire others to be documentation champions
